Land Rover Defender: Celebrating the Legend

As production of the Land Rover Defender draws to a close at the end of 2015, FP Creative is marking the occasion the way we know best – by creating beautiful and informative stories that communicate the rich history, myriad achievements and monumental legacy of the one of the world’s best-loved off-road vehicles. ‘Celebrating the Legend: the story behind the original Land Rover’, a multi-component printed media pack, is the latest example.

The book Celebrating the Legend is a potted history of the Defender, with everything from the vehicle’s evolution and gruelling expeditions to the movers and shakers of this world who have fallen in love with them. The second book in the pack is themed around Red Wharf Bay, detailing the story behind the original design drawn by Maurice Wilks in the sand of the titular Anglesey beach in 1947, and the subsequent recent re-sketching using six Defenders to create a sand drawing over a kilometre long. Enough, you say? Not quite.

The Celebration packs also contained a foldout A1-size Red Wharf Bay poster, with a comprehensive map of the Defender’s global expeditions on the reverse. Plus, one of six miniature pop-out self-assembly card models of classic Defenders. And technical information cards for the three special-edition 2015 Defenders – the Adventure, Heritage and Autobiography.

Generating over 60 pages of compelling content across two books, along with all the other meticulously researched and intricately designed visual assets, was a challenging enough assignment without the four-week turnaround from briefing to delivery. But the result – both the client’s extremely positive feedback and the pack’s popularity at the Geneva Motor Show 2015 – was well worth all the late evenings.

The Defender celebrations will continue to the end of this year, and a second edition of the book will be packed with even more stories as they unfold.
